If you love the sound of country music you probably know all of the classics. Country music has changed over time, today’s country is more up beat and rock or pop influenced. A list of the greatest country artists of all time has been composed. To make the list artists had to have a large number of record sales, number one hits, popularity, influence on other artists, and other factors. Here’s the top 10 country music artists of all time
- Johnny Cash- Johnny Cash was born on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas. He was born to Ray Cash and Carrie Cloveree Rivers. He was the 4th child out of 7. He produced his first album in 1957. He has written over 1500 songs and has had 48 singles on the hot 100 charts. He has produced numerous albums and has been very successful. He has also won 11 Grammies.
- Hank Williams- He was born on September 17, 1923 in Alabama, and died on January 1, 1953. In his short life of 29 years he produced 35 singles, 11 of which placed number one on the charts. He received one grammy and has received 6 other country music awards, including Number 2 of the 40 greatest men in country music.
- Merle Haggard- He was born on April 6, 193 in Oildale, California. He recorded his first song in 1962 called “Skid Row”. He then went on to have 38 number one hits. He has received 3 grammies, and 18 other country music awards.
- Patsy Cline- She was born on September 8, 1932 in Winchester, Virginia, to Sam and Hilda Patterson Hensley. She died on March 5, 1963. Patsy recorded her first song “A Church, A Courtroom & Then Good-Bye” in 1955. Cline recorded 4 albums, her last being Faded Love. She won a number of awards as well as staring in, and inspiring movies and plays.
- Jimmie Rodgers- Jimmie was born on September 8th, 1897. He had two older brothers. His first recordings “The Soldier’s Sweetheart” and “Sleep, Baby, Sleep” were recorded on August 4, 1927. He recorded 108 songs during his career from 1927 to 1933. Jimmie passes away on May 26, 1933.
- Bill Monroe-Bill was born on September 13, 1911 in Rosine, Kentucky. He passed away on Spetember 9, 1996 at the age of 84. In 1936 Bill recorded his first song ”What Would You Give In Exchange For Your Soul?”. Monroe has recieved a number of awards being one of five people to ever be inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame (1970), The Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame (1971), and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1997). He was also added to the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 1991. He is known as the “Father of Bluegrass”. In 1993, he recieved a Grammy and the National Medal of Arts in 19985
- Carter Family- The Carter Family consists of A.P. Carter, Sara Carter, Maybelle Carter, Helen Carter, Anita Carter, June Carter Cash, Janette Carter, and Joe Carter. They recorded songs from 1927 to 1944.
- Willie Nelson- He was born April 30, 1933. He produced his first album in 1962 and has been successful since then.
- Waylon Jennings- He was born on June 15, 1937 and died on February 13, 2002. He has received 2 Grammies, 4 CMA’s and others.
- George Jones- He was born on September 12, 1931 and has recorded over 150 hits, 14 being number ones.
